High on a mountain in the town of La Cantera, in Gaspar Hernández, Espaillat province, stands a gigantic image of the Virgin of Guadalupe that has become a pilgrimage destination for believers from all over the country. The site, known as the Monument or Sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe, combines Marian devotion with a natural environment of great beauty, offering visitors a unique experience of faith and recollection.
Origin of the image
According to Crisolia Tavares, an elderly local, the image of the Virgin that presides over the sanctuary is a replica brought directly from Mexico. It was installed on the mountaintop on the initiative of businessman Yunior Hernández, of the Hernández-García family, as an act of devotion and gratitude. The intention was to create a prayer space that would replicate, on a smaller scale, the spirit of Tepeyac in Dominican lands.
A spring of holy water
One of the main attractions of the sanctuary, besides faith, is a spring of crystal-clear water that flows in the area. Locals and visitors consider this water to be holy and to possess healing properties. The spring flows constantly, even during dry seasons, reinforcing the belief in its miraculous nature. Many pilgrims come with containers to take the water home.
A landscape that invites silence
Those who dare to climb the approximately one hundred steps leading to the image are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view. From the top, you can see the green hills stretching until they meet the Atlantic Ocean. The wind hits the cliff with force, creating an atmosphere of recollection that, according to visitors, invites prayer and contemplation.
Community and economic importance
The constant flow of pilgrims has transformed the dynamics of the La Cantera community. Local residents have organized the cleaning of trails, the sale of food, and the guidance of visitors, especially during religious festivities. Many say that the sanctuary has not only strengthened local faith but has also brought economic activity back to this remote mountain community.
The great celebration on December 12
Every December 12, the mountain comes alive during the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Thousands of people arrive from different parts of the country carrying flowers, candles, and promises. The road collapses, chants echo among the rocks, and the mountain stays awake until dawn. In a nearby cave, devotees place large candles and offerings as a sign of their gratitude and devotion.
