In the Morcá village, a rural area of Sogamoso (Boyacá), a group of residents claims to have found the outline of the face of the Virgin Mary on a rock. The figure, visible on a mountainside, began to attract believers after images and videos of the discovery were shared on social media. One of the clips was posted on the TikTok profile of singer Jimmy Ayala, who stated that he discovered the formation after visiting the sanctuary of the Virgin of the O of Morcá, a deeply rooted devotion in the region.
“We are going to tell you something, we were coming down here and saw some people gathered because the little virgin appeared here,” Ayala recounted in the video. According to his testimony, several neighbors were already gathered in prayer around the rock when he arrived. “Family, today, like the first of every month, we visited the little virgin of the O of Morcá and while walking down we found some people praying in this area, look. They tell us that she appeared there, just as she is on the stone. According to them, she appeared three months ago there,” he added in the description of his post.
The recording shows that on a part of the rock, the face of a woman is distinguishable, an image that Catholic believers associate with the Virgin Mary. Apparently, the figure may have formed after the natural detachment of some fragments of the mountain. However, the case has generated divided opinions: while some believers consider it a Marian apparition, other skeptics suggest that the figure was carved or drawn. “This image is carved” or “That is paint,” are some of the comments from those who question the heavenly origin of the discovery.
Religious context and ecclesiastical process
The Virgin of the O is a Marian devotion associated with the Advent season, when the Church remembers the wait for the birth of Jesus. Its name is linked to the liturgical antiphons that begin with the letter “O,” present in that tradition. It should be noted that this type of manifestation goes through a formal process if official recognition as a Marian apparition is sought. The Catholic Herald explains that the Church evaluates the credibility of testimonies, coherence with doctrine, and the spiritual effects that the phenomenon produces in the community.
For now, the image on the rock of Morcá continues to be a reason for prayer for some and skepticism for others, while ecclesiastical authorities have not officially commented on the case. The local Catholic community hopes that, if its authenticity is confirmed, this discovery may strengthen faith and devotion in the region.
