The Sanctuary of A Franqueira: A Thousand Years of Faith and Miracles in the Mountains of Galicia

In the heart of the Montes da Paradanta, at almost a thousand meters altitude and surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscapes in southern Galicia, stands a place that for centuries has attracted thousands of people moved by faith, tradition, and hope. This is the Sanctuary of A Franqueira, located in the Pontevedra municipality of A Cañiza, one of the most important pilgrimage centers in Galicia and an enclave that has fueled stories of miracles, healings, and favors attributed to the Virgin for generations.

Although for many Galicians it remains a place of spiritual reference, outside Galicia it continues to be largely unknown. However, its history, its legends, and the extraordinary popular devotion it inspires make it one of the most fascinating Marian sanctuaries in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Legend of the Discovery

The history of the sanctuary is shrouded in a legend that has survived to the present day. According to tradition, the image of the Virgin remained hidden among some rocks on the mountain known as O Couto da Vella after being concealed to protect it from Muslim incursions. Centuries later, an elderly woman discovered the image upon observing a mysterious glow among the rocks. The news spread quickly throughout the region and gave rise to a devotion that remains alive today.

The discovery sparked a dispute between the parishes of A Franqueira and Luneda, both wanting to house the future sanctuary. The solution was as curious as it was symbolic: place the image on a cart pulled by oxen with blindfolds and build the temple where the animals decided to stop. Tradition holds that they stopped next to a spring in A Franqueira, the place where the sanctuary would eventually be built.

Documented History and Popular Devotion

Beyond the legend, the existence of a monastic community at this site is documented from the 11th century. Initially linked to the Benedictines, it later became part of the Cistercian Order, which promoted the construction of the church that still stands. The monastery disappeared after the 19th-century disentailments, although the temple maintained its religious relevance intact.

The Virgin of A Franqueira is popularly known as a «miraculous» image. For generations, thousands of faithful have come to the sanctuary to seek help for illnesses, personal difficulties, or family problems. As testimony to this devotion, the temple preserves numerous ex-votos deposited by people thanking for the favors they attribute to the Virgin.

Pilgrimages and Living Traditions

The busiest time comes during the pilgrimages of As Pascuillas, celebrated on the Monday of Pentecost, and on the feast day of September 8. On these dates, thousands of pilgrims ascend to the sanctuary from different points in Galicia and northern Portugal. Some parishes even bring their own religious images, leading one of the most striking manifestations of popular religiosity in the community.

Especially unique is the September procession, when the Virgin travels around the sanctuary on a cart pulled by oxen, reenacting the legend that decided the final location of the temple. The day is completed with traditional dances and performances related to the miracles attributed to the patroness of A Franqueira.

History, heritage, tradition, and faith come together in this corner of A Paradanta. A place that has been part of the spiritual life of Galicia for over a thousand years and continues to gather thousands of people each year convinced that, among the mountains of southern Galicia, one of the deepest and oldest devotions of the community remains alive.
