General Rodríguez Parish Receives Relic of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

The Miraculous Medal Parish of General Rodríguez is preparing to receive, this Saturday, June 6, the relics of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a 17th-century French nun known for the revelations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The ceremony will take place during the 6:30 PM Mass at the church located at Rawson No. 260, between Belgrano and Rivadavia. The following day, an image of the saint will be blessed and enthroned in the Sacred Heart chapel of La Fraternidad, according to Father Alejandro Trobo, parish priest.

Father Trobo explained that «Jesus appeared to her (the saint) and showed her his heart and invited her to unite with that heart, and from that arises the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, so widespread in the world.» This devotion, which is especially relevant during the month of June, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, will be strengthened by the presence of the relic, which consists of «a small piece of bone, a way to venerate and unite with her intercession,» the priest specified. The relic will be present at Saturday’s Mass, while on Sunday, June 7, at 9 AM, the image will be enthroned in the Sacred Heart chapel of La Fraternidad.

It is important to distinguish between popular devotion, the saint’s testimony, and the official recognition of the Church. The devotion to the Sacred Heart, based on the private revelations of Saint Margaret Mary, has been approved and promoted by the Church over the centuries, but it does not constitute a dogma of faith. The veneration of relics, for its part, is a traditional practice that seeks to honor the saints and ask for their intercession, without implying that magical powers are attributed to them. The enthronement of the image in the chapel is a liturgical act that expresses the community’s desire to deepen this spirituality.

On Sunday, June 7, the solemnity of Corpus Christi will also be celebrated, commemorating the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. On that occasion, the parish will hold a procession with the Blessed Sacrament through various neighborhoods of General Rodríguez, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The route will include stops in La Fraternidad, Barrio Raffo, Villa Ita, Municipal Cemetery, Barrio San Martín, Villa Arrarás, Bicentenario, and Favaloro, where they will stop at hermitages and significant places for the community. The faithful are invited to join by car or bicycle, or to receive the blessing as the procession passes.

Context and relevance

The arrival of the relic of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque is part of the jubilee year for the 350th anniversary of the revelations of the Sacred Heart, celebrated throughout the universal Church. This saint, canonized in 1920, is a reference point for spirituality centered on the merciful love of Christ. The initiative of the Miraculous Medal Parish seeks to bring the faithful closer to this devotion, especially in a month dedicated to the Sacred Heart. In addition, the Corpus Christi procession is an opportunity to publicly testify to Eucharistic faith, as expressed by Father Trobo: «the communion we receive at Mass; every year on that Sunday we go out with a truck to tour the neighborhoods with the Blessed Sacrament.»

In the ecclesial sphere, the veneration of relics and the enthronement of images are permitted and encouraged practices, provided they are carried out with due respect and without superstition. The Church, through the Congregation for Divine Worship, establishes norms for the authenticity of relics and their exposure. In this case, the relic of the saint has been donated to the parish and will be presented to the faithful for veneration, which constitutes an act of piety that reinforces communion with the saints. The community is called to participate in these acts with faith and devotion, remembering that the center of Christian life is Christ, present in the Eucharist.

Finally, the weekend also coincides with the National Caritas Collection, which takes place throughout the month of June, but with special emphasis on the 6th and 7th. Father Trobo reminded that donations can be made at any parish in the country, via envelopes or transfers. This collection is a concrete expression of Christian charity, complementing liturgical celebrations. In addition, on Friday, June 12, in La Fraternidad, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be celebrated with Mass, consecrations of the Guard of Honor, torchlight procession, and a community celebration. These activities seek to strengthen the spiritual and community life of the faithful of General Rodríguez.
