Pope Francis declares Antoni Gaudí venerable, bringing him closer to beatification

The Vatican has taken a significant step in the beatification process of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Pope Francis has authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the "heroic virtues" of the brilliant creator, granting him the title of "venerable." This recognition constitutes the first formal stage on the path to sainthood in the Catholic Church.

A recognition of faith and work

The figure of Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) transcends his universal architectural legacy. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints, after years of diocesan research and theological study, has concluded that the architect lived the Christian virtues to a heroic degree. This ruling highlights not only his profound spirituality, but also his humility, charity, and dedication, aspects that marked his personal and professional life.

The road ahead to beatification

With the declaration of venerable, the process moves on to its next critical phase: the demonstration of a miracle attributed to his intercession. For Gaudí to be proclaimed blessed, the postulators of his cause must present to the Holy See a case of healing or extraordinary event, scientifically inexplicable, that occurred after a request addressed to the architect. The verification and approval of this miracle by the Vatican authorities would be the final requirement for the beatification ceremony.

Gaudí, an artist in the service of the divine

Gaudí's masterpiece, the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, is considered the ultimate expression of his faith. The architect devoted the last years of his life almost exclusively to this project, conceiving it not as a simple construction, but as a catechesis in stone that would narrate the mysteries of the Christian faith. His deep Catholicism and personal asceticism have been central elements in the investigation for his cause of beatification, painting the portrait of a man who put his creative genius at the service of God.
