A spiritual meeting place
For nine consecutive days, the grotto located on Ushuaia Street in Cerrillos, Salta province, became a center of devotion and communion for local residents. Neighbors from the central area and various surrounding neighborhoods gathered each afternoon, bringing their chairs, prayer cards, and personal experiences to participate in a novena dedicated to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. What began as a cycle of prayers evolved into an authentic neighborhood celebration, focused on gratitude and petitions for health, work, and family well-being.
The power of a universal invocation
Devotion to the Miraculous Medal, associated by the Catholic faithful with protection, healing, and spiritual strength, acted as a catalyst for a profound community phenomenon. Prayers were offered especially for the sick, the unemployed, children, and the particular needs of each household. Particularly emotional moments were experienced when attendees shared their intentions to be read publicly, reinforcing the sense of mutual support.
A celebration with local identity
On the main day of the festival, the image of the Virgin of the Grotto was accompanied by other Marian representations from different neighborhoods of Cerrillos and by a replica of the Lord of the Miracle, consolidating the traditional Salta link between various devotions. The space was decorated with white flowers, tablecloths, and lights, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and care. After the novena, a Mass was celebrated by the local parish priest, Pablo Romero, and a procession was held through the streets of the city center, with Marian songs led by Carlos Valenzuela.
The silent work of the community
The success of the gathering was the result of the organizational and logistical efforts of numerous neighbors, among whom Matías Sayús García, María del Carmen Jora, Karina Burgos, and Sergio Gareca stood out. Their tasks ranged from cleaning and decorating the venue to coordinating the liturgy and the procession, complemented by a community snack. During the celebration, Ana Marín recalled the pioneers of this devotion in Cerrillos during the 1980s, such as Deacon Diego Guzmán and Francisco "Pancho" Díaz, whose work laid the foundations for new generations to keep this tradition alive.
A tradition with historical roots
Every November 27, the Catholic Church celebrates the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal, a devotion that originated in France after the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Catherine Labouré, a nun of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, in the 19th century. The Virgin entrusted the minting of a medal as a sign of grace and protection for those who wear it with faith. This tradition, which has spread globally, has found a particular expression in Cerrillos, adapted to the local context. With an eye to the future, the residents are already planning how to maintain and care for the grotto on Ushuaia Street, so that it continues to be a place of encounter, hope, and companionship in the daily life of the neighborhood.
