In Mexico, December 12th constitutes one of the most significant dates in the Catholic religious calendar, dedicated to honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of Mexico and Empress of the Americas. This day annually gathers hundreds of thousands of pilgrims at the Basilica of Guadalupe, located on the hill of Tepeyac, north of Mexico City.
A Vigil of Faith and Devotion
The celebrations begin from the eve, December 11th, with a solemn vigil mass dedicated to the Virgin. This liturgical act gives way to a night of tributes, prayer, and songs that prepare the spirit of those present for the central moment: the singing of the traditional «Mañanitas.» According to the official schedule of the Guadalupe Festivities, this musical tribute will take place at exactly 00:00 hours on the 12th, before a crowd of devotees.
Broadcast for All the Faithful
To allow the participation of those who cannot attend in person, the ceremonies will be broadcast live through various digital platforms and television networks starting at 23:00 hours on December 11th. The coverage will include the solemn act, the serenade with the «Guadalupe Hymn» and other pieces, and will continue with the Eucharistic celebration, thus facilitating the spiritual union of the Catholic community throughout the national territory.
Historical and Religious Foundation
This commemoration has its origin in the accounts of the Marian apparitions of 1531. According to Catholic tradition, December 12th commemorates the last apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe to Saint Juan Diego. In response to the request of Bishop Fray Juan de Zumárraga for a sign, the Virgin instructed Juan Diego to climb to the summit of Tepeyac, where, in the midst of winter, he found Castilian roses in bloom. When he extended his tilma before the bishop to show the flowers, the image of the dark-skinned Virgin was miraculously imprinted on the fabric, an event that consolidated the devotion and led to the construction of the first sanctuary at the site.
Today, that same site hosts one of the most massive pilgrimages in the world, with the Basilica of Guadalupe being a perennial symbol of identity, faith, and unity for the Mexican people and millions of believers on the continent.
