Saint Agatha, Patron Saint of Breast Cancer, Inspires Faith and Strength in Women

A Legacy of Courage in the Face of Suffering

In the context of World Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the figure of Saint Agatha (also known as Saint Agueda) emerges strongly as a spiritual reference for countless women. From the Rectory of Our Lady of Lourdes in Mexico City, Father Manuel Corral, canon of the Metropolitan Cathedral, promotes devotion to this 3rd-century saint, whose martyrdom consecrated her as the patron saint of those suffering from breast diseases.

The Historical Testimony of a Martyr

According to tradition, Saint Agatha, a young Sicilian woman, consecrated her life to God and was persecuted during the Roman Empire for this. After rejecting the advances of an authority, she was tortured and mutilated. The Catholic faith recounts that, while imprisoned, she was visited and healed by Saint Peter, although she ultimately died as a martyr. «That is why, since ancient times, she has been considered the patron saint of women with breast cancer and other illnesses,» explained Father Corral in an interview with ACI Prensa.

A Message of Comfort in Diagnosis

The priest addressed the emotional impact of receiving a cancer diagnosis, describing it as a «terrible» moment due to its personal and familial consequences. «However, by looking to Saint Agatha, with all the sufferings she had to endure, it can help a woman know that she is not alone,» he stated. He emphasized that the first response in such a situation should be faith and trust that God does not abandon in painful trials.

Intercession and the Meaning of Pain

Father Corral clarified a crucial point of Catholic doctrine: «Saints do not perform miracles. The miracle is performed by God through the intercession of that saint.» Faced with the recurring question of «why me?», the priest recalled the vulnerable human condition and pointed out that the key lies in finding meaning in suffering, something only faith can provide. «Saint Agatha suffered greatly but never renounced God. On the contrary, she found meaning in her pain by trusting fully,» he highlighted.

Community, Prayer, and Cases of Healing

For over a year, a special Mass has been held on the 5th of each month at the Rectory of Our Lady of Lourdes, followed by a time of prayer and the anointing of the sick before a painting of Saint Agatha. Father Corral shared that he has recorded «two cases of women who asked for the intercession of Saint Agatha and, in their routine check-ups, were found to be cured.» One of the cases involved metastasis. While celebrating these news, the priest was emphatic in not downplaying the importance of prevention and medical diagnosis, encouraging regular check-ups.

Advice for Families

For families accompanying a loved one with cancer, Father Corral recommended prayer in communion. «I recommend that, as a family, every day all together, next to the sick woman, they light a candle that represents the light of Christ,» he expressed. This practice, he explained, strengthens bonds and allows offering the pain in solidarity for a just cause, transforming the trial into an act of love and unity.
