The Miracle Repeats: The Blood of Saint Januarius Liquefies in Naples

The Italian city of Naples was the scene, on September 19, 2025, of a new episode of the religious phenomenon that repeats periodically: the liquefaction of the blood of Saint Januarius. This event, considered by many faithful as a miracle, gathered a crowd of devotees in a moment of deep faith and reflection.

A Sign of Hope for the Community

The ceremony, broadcast by the program «Storie Italiane» on RaiPlay, showed the moment when the content of the ampoule, preserved in the Cathedral of Naples, changed state. For the local Catholic tradition, this fact is not a mere physical phenomenon, but a divine sign interpreted as auspicious for the city and its inhabitants, renewing hope and trust in the protection of the patron saint.

Roots in a Centuries-Old Devotion

Saint Januarius, bishop of Benevento, was martyred in the early 4th century. The veneration of his relics, particularly the ampoules containing what is believed to be his coagulated blood, is a cornerstone of Neapolitan religiosity. The liquefaction phenomenon is historically recorded on three main dates: the Saturday before the first Sunday of May (commemorating the transfer of the relics), September 19 (the saint’s feast day), and December 16 (the anniversary of the 1631 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, during which his intercession was invoked).

The Catholic Church, although it has not officially defined it as a miracle in the dogmatic sense, recognizes the authenticity of the devotion and allows its celebration. The event transcends the religious, becoming a powerful cultural and identity symbol for Naples, uniting the community around a living tradition.
