Orvieto, the Italian city known worldwide for its imposing rock and rich religious history, is this year immersed in an atmosphere of special recollection and hope. The solemnity of Corpus Domini is celebrated with a particular climate, marked by the expectation of a great event: it will be precisely this ancient «city of the Popes» that will host the National Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for September 2027.
The wait is almost palpable in the streets and alleys of the city, where the cathedral of Santa Maria della Stella stands solemn and majestic. This temple, resplendent with the luminous golden polychromy of its mosaics that the sun kisses at sunset, seems to radiate its own light, reminding the faithful and visitors of the profound Eucharistic devotion that characterizes the community.
A Eucharistic legacy that transcends borders
«All over the world there is a little piece of Orvieto, because all over the world the Corpus Domini procession takes place,» recounts Don Danilo Innocenzi, archdeacon and president of the cathedral chapter. This statement underscores the spiritual influence of the city, which guards the famous Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena, which occurred in 1263, when a consecrated host bled onto the corporal, strengthening faith in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This miracle prompted the institution of the solemnity of Corpus Christi by Pope Urban IV.
The preparation for the National Eucharistic Congress involves not only logistical aspects but also a profound path of spiritual renewal. The diocese of Orvieto-Todi, together with local authorities and the faithful, works to welcome pilgrims from all over Italy and the world, offering a testimony of faith rooted in tradition and open to contemporary challenges.
The cathedral, with its decorated facade and its interior housing the reliquary of the Corporal, becomes the heart of this preparation. Masses, Eucharistic adorations, and catechesis multiply, inviting believers to deepen the mystery of the Eucharist as the source and summit of Christian life. The entire city dresses up to receive visitors, offering not only its artistic heritage but also the warmth of a community that lives its faith authentically.
The 2027 National Eucharistic Congress promises to be a milestone in the life of the Church in Italy, and Orvieto prepares to be the stage for this encounter of grace, where the memory of the Eucharistic miracle joins the hope of a future of renewed faith.
