Medjugorje: Between Faith, Phenomena, and Spiritual Transformation

A Village at the Epicenter of the Supernatural

Medjugorje, a rural town in Bosnia-Herzegovina, became a global focus in 1981 when six children reported an apparition of the Virgin Mary. This event, occurring in the context of communist Yugoslavia and on the eve of armed conflicts, initiated a religious phenomenon that has lasted for over four decades. Three of those visionaries, now adults between 50 and 60 years old, claim to still receive daily messages, along with ten secrets that, according to their testimony, will be fulfilled before their death.

From Personal Investigation to Public Testimony

Journalist Pablo Rioja documents his process in «Objective Medjugorje,» a book that arose from a pilgrimage begun in 2012. Rioja, who initially approached the place interested in topics such as the Novissimi—a theological term for death, judgment, and eternal destiny—and demonic possessions, experienced a profound spiritual transformation. His work, presented as an emotional road movie, seeks to convey the personal experience rather than impose a conclusion.

Observed Phenomena and Open Debates

Rioja describes intense scenes during his visits, including what he identifies as cases of demonic possession, with physical and vocal manifestations he describes as «Dantesque.» However, he emphasizes that the «true miracle» of Medjugorje lies in the atmosphere of recollection: the absolute silence during reported apparitions, Eucharistic adorations, and the long lines for the sacrament of confession. Daily, about 50,000 people gather in a large tent to pray, showing, according to the author, a striking respect for the sacred.

The Cautious Stance of the Catholic Church

The Holy See maintains a study commission on the events of Medjugorje. Pope Francis, recognizing the magnitude of the phenomenon, designated a permanent apostolic visitor at the site. The Church, with its characteristic prudence toward the supernatural, has not issued an official recognition of the apparitions, but also does not prohibit pilgrimages, emphasizing the importance of spiritual fruits such as conversions and the return to the sacraments.

Testimonies of Conversion and the Search for Meaning

The book collects numerous accounts of personal transformation. Rioja mentions everything from a skeptical journalist who ended up embracing the priesthood, to a wealthy couple who, after their visit, founded a shelter for people in poverty. The author insists that Medjugorje offers «a different gift for each person,» which often translates into an experience of hope, forgiveness, and reconciliation with faith.

An Experience That Challenges Skepticism

For Rioja, his time in Medjugorje altered his conception of a merciful and close God. Although he acknowledges that skepticism is understandable in a society that has lost, in his opinion, its Christian roots, he invites experiencing it without prejudice. «I dare to bet my two feet and two hands that it will not leave you disappointed,» he states, highlighting that, beyond debates about the supernatural, the sanctuary has consolidated itself as a space of deep spiritual search for millions.
