The community of Balasar is preparing to celebrate the feast day in honor of Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa, known as Alexandrina of Balasar, on October 11, 12, and 13. This year, the celebrations take on historical significance with the blessing and dedication of the altar and ambo of the new Eucharistic shrine dedicated to the blessed, an event that will be presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Braga, Monsignor José Cordeiro.
A milestone in devotion to the Portuguese blessed
The new sanctuary, built on land near the parish church of Balasar, is a tangible testimony to the growing devotion to this 20th-century Salesian cooperator, recognized for her total dedication to Christ and her offering for suffering humanity. The structure stands as a spiritual center for pilgrims who seek to follow her example of Eucharistic and reparative life.
Program of liturgical celebrations
The events will begin on October 4 with a preparatory novena. The 11th will be dedicated to children and adolescents, with activities designed to bring them closer to the figure of Alexandrina. In the evening, at 9:00 p.m., the traditional candlelight procession will take place from the House of Alexandrina to the new sanctuary, carrying the images of the blessed and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The day will conclude with Eucharistic Adoration led by young people.
Dedication of the altar and Marian consecration
The central moment will take place on October 12. After welcoming pilgrims from 8:00 a.m., at 10:30 a.m. the Eucharist will be celebrated with the liturgical dedication of the altar and ambo. In the afternoon, there will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and meditations on the theme "Like Alexandrina, living the joy of hope," culminating with Holy Mass at 5:00 p.m. On the 13th, the liturgical feast of the blessed, the Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place during the solemn Mass, also presided over by Bishop Cordeiro.
Accessibility and universal transmission
The celebrations will feature interpretation in Portuguese sign language, demonstrating a commitment to inclusion. In addition, they will be broadcast live on the sanctuary's official website (www.alexandrinadebalasar.com), allowing the faithful from all over the world to participate. Father Dário Pedroso will lead the meditations, and priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the three days.
