The city of Alcoy, in the Valencian Community, is in the final preparations for the central days of the Fiesta del Jesuset del Miracle, a religious and cultural tradition whose origins date back to 1569. The celebration, organized by the Association of the Holy Child Jesus of the Miracle, officially began on January 14 with the reading of the proclamation and will extend until February 6.
Central Events and Episcopal Participation
The core of the festival will take place during the weekend of January 24 to 26. The day of Sunday, January 26, will stand out for its solemnity, starting with the Mass of the Tullidet at 9:00 a.m. in the Monastery of the Holy Sepulchre. Subsequently, at 11:00 a.m., a solemn mass will be celebrated presided over by Monsignor José Vilaplana, Bishop Emeritus of Huelva. During this Eucharist, the ‘Solemn Vow of the Council of the Town of Alcoy made on January 6, 1569’ will be read, a historical document that will be read by the city’s mayor, reinforcing the bond between the municipal institution and this centuries-old devotion.
Procession and New Features in the Program
After the solemn mass, the procession of the Blessed Sacrament will take place, with the active participation of the Guild of Farmers and the Sant Jordi Dance Group, elements that highlight the popular and guild character of the celebration. As a new feature for this edition, the program will include a solidarity symphonic concert on February 1, expanding the cultural reach of the festival. The events will conclude on February 6 with the performance of the sacramental play ‘El Jesuset del Miracle’, by the theater group Tesalín.
A Tradition Rooted in Local History
The festival commemorates the theft and subsequent miraculous discovery of an image of the Child Jesus, an event recorded in 1569 that deeply marked Alcoy’s religiosity. The Association in charge of its organization works to preserve both the historical rigor and the spiritual dimension of the events. According to historian Jordi Linares, the association’s communication officer, this celebration synthesizes faith, history, and collective identity. Professor Margarita Company, this year’s herald, highlighted the deep emotional and theatrical connection that the community maintains with the figure of the ‘Jesuset’.
