A historical event that marked local spirituality
The Cristo Rey University Residence in Granada hosted a conference this Wednesday, February 12, dedicated to the «Eucharistic Miracle of the Sacred Hosts of Alhama.» The lecture, delivered by Greco-Latin priest and director of the Archdiocesan Secretariat for Ecumenism, Father Sorin Catrinescu, is part of a series organized on the occasion of the tricentennial of the sacrilegious theft that occurred in 1725.
The event that inspired art and devotion
The historical event dates back to 1725, when the consecrated Sacred Hosts were stolen from the convent of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers in Alhama de Granada. According to Art Historian María del Pilar Bertos from the University of Granada, this event «gave rise to significant artistic and literary manifestations,» generating a corpus of sermons and goldsmith pieces from the 18th and 20th centuries that testify to its profound impact on the believing community.
A series to deepen understanding of the Eucharistic mystery
This lecture series, inaugurated on January 24 with a talk on «Eucharist and Holy Mass» by Father José Antonio Senovilla, will extend until May. Its goal is to offer a theological and historical reflection on the sacrament of the Eucharist, taking the Alhama event as a starting point. The sessions, which feature the participation of various diocesan priests, are generally held at 6:30 PM.
Upcoming scheduled reflections
The calendar continues with three more lectures: on March 27, Father Ildefonso Fernández-Fígares, Episcopal Delegate for Catholic Education, will speak on «Eucharist and Eternity.» On April 4, it will be the turn of Father Francisco Campos, parish priest of San Rafael, with «The Proximity of God in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.» The series will conclude on May 12 with the intervention of Father Ricardo Aldana, of the Servants of Jesus, who will discuss «Eucharist and Sacrament.»
