An extraordinary event during the liturgy
On November 15, 2013, during morning Mass at Christ the King Church in Vilakannur, within the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Tellicherry (Kerala, India), the celebrant, Father Thomas Pethickal, observed an unusual phenomenon. What he described as an image that appeared to represent the face of Jesus Christ appeared on the consecrated host. This event, which occurred at the central moment of the Eucharistic liturgy, was the starting point of a process that culminated more than a decade later with official recognition by the Holy See.
A rigorous and prudent investigation
True to its usual procedure in such cases, the Church acted with extreme prudence. The host was carefully preserved and an exhaustive investigation was launched that lasted for years. This process included theological analysis by experts, scientific studies, and medical evaluations, with the aim of ruling out any natural explanation, manipulation, or fraud. The methodology applied follows the protocols established for the examination of alleged supernatural phenomena, ensuring serious and objective scrutiny.
The official announcement of recognition
On May 9, 2025, Archbishop Joseph Pamplany, Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Tellicherry, made the final ruling public. He announced that the Holy See, after reviewing all the evidence and conclusions of the investigation, officially recognizes the event as a Eucharistic miracle. This pronouncement implies that, in the opinion of the Vatican authorities, there is no natural explanation for what happened, thus confirming its supernatural nature. The recognition places this event in the tradition of other Eucharistic miracles authenticated by the Church over the centuries.
Pastoral significance and strengthening of faith
Beyond the validation of the miraculous event, the Church emphasizes its spiritual and pastoral significance. The miracle rekindles the faith of believers in the mystery of transubstantiation, a central dogma of Catholic doctrine that affirms the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic species. It presents itself as a powerful invitation to rediscover the centrality of the Eucharist in Christian life, to deepen adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and to strengthen Eucharistic devotion. The event in Kerala thus becomes a call to spiritual renewal, reminding the faithful of the profound reality of Christ's sacrifice and presence in every Mass celebrated throughout the world.
