Young people from Mazarrón relive the Miracle of 1585 with a dramatized reading at the Sanctuary of La Purísima

The Sanctuary of La Purísima in Mazarrón was the setting for an emotional historical and religious performance, in which young students reenacted the testimonies of what is known as the Miracle of Mazarrón, which took place on November 17, 1585. The dramatized reading, held last night, is part of the main activities of the Fiestas del Milagro (Miracle Festivities) that honor this event, which is deeply rooted in the community.

Generational change in the preservation of tradition

For another consecutive year, a group of students from the IES Domingo Valdivieso secondary school took on the responsibility of interpreting the nine historical testimonies that document the miraculous event. This youth participation symbolizes a generational change that guarantees the continuity of a tradition that for decades has kept alive the collective memory and religious identity of the municipality. The staging stands out for its cultural and educational value, linking new generations to the historical and spiritual heritage of their locality.

A community production with multiple collaborators

The event was organized jointly by the Mazarrón Municipal Library and Archive in collaboration with the local parish. It featured a large cast of young performers who brought to life the original witnesses of the miracle, including figures such as the mayor, the scribe, the hospitaleros, the sacristan, the doctor, and several neighbors of the time. The historical texts were adapted by María Concepción Acosta Méndez and Magdalena Campillo Méndez, while Isabel Moreno and María Dolores García were in charge of the theatrical direction.

Artistic and musical elements that enriched the ceremony

The performance included a carefully selected musical accompaniment by Esthefany González Cartagena, under the direction of María Cecilia Morales Valera, who also performed the Hymn of the Miracle. These artistic elements contributed to creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere, appropriate for the commemoration of an event that, according to local Catholic tradition, had a profound impact on the religious history of Mazarrón. The event strengthened community ties and served as a testament to the vitality of expressions of popular faith.
