A tangible sign of devotion
Devotion to Blessed Carlo Acutis, the young Italian who died in 2006 and is known for his deep Eucharistic faith and evangelizing work on the internet, is experiencing remarkable growth worldwide. In the context of his upcoming canonization, scheduled for April 27 in Rome during the Jubilee of Adolescents, the Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino has reported the distribution of more than 2,500 relics in various countries.
Rigorous procedure and traceability
Marina Rosati, director of the Communications Office of the diocese that safeguards Acutis' remains, explained that the distribution follows a strict protocol. The relics cannot be requested by individuals, but only by priests or religious through their bishop, who must send a formal request to Monsignor Domenico Sorrentino, bishop of Assisi. The request must state the reason for the request and specify the place where the relic will be displayed, such as a parish, hospital, or prayer center.
Control and custody of the remains
Each relic has a sequential number that allows for traceability, ensuring that the diocese knows its location and recipient. Furthermore, they are not sent by mail; they must be picked up in person at the Sanctuary of the Spogliazione in Assisi or by an authorized delegate. Rosati clarified that Acutis' family is not involved in the permits, as the body was formally donated to the Church of Assisi by notarial deed.
Global distribution and fraud alert
The relics have reached numerous countries, with Italy and Poland having the largest number, followed by Ireland, other European nations, India, the Philippines, the United States, Latin America, and China. At the same time, church authorities have denounced the existence of illegal auctions on the internet offering alleged relics of Acutis without any guarantee. Monsignor Sorrentino filed a complaint with the Italian police, describing this trade as "unacceptable."
A role model for new generations
Carlo Acutis, who died at the age of 15 from leukemia, is venerated for his intense Eucharistic life and for having created a website documenting Eucharistic miracles recognized by the Church. About to be canonized, he is presented as a model of contemporary holiness, close to young people and capable of using digital language with an evangelical spirit.
