The community of Humahuaca, in the province of Jujuy, is going through a moment of deep spiritual renewal after the vandal attack that left the image of the Virgin of Urkupiña decapitated in the San Roque area. What at the time generated indignation and sadness, today becomes a testimony of unity and faith, thanks to the tireless effort of the Domínguez family and the neighbors who decided to rebuild the sanctuary «by hand».
A collective reconstruction
The grotto, which had been damaged in an act of vandalism, began to rise again thanks to community work and the collaboration of those who contributed materials such as cement, iron, and lime, as well as money through a solidarity campaign. This mobilization not only allowed repairing the material damage, but also meant a spiritual repair for all those who find in that space a place of encounter, prayer, and tradition.
The Domínguez family, custodians of the sanctuary, led the reconstruction tasks with the support of the neighbors, who organized themselves to bring life back to a site deeply significant for the community. Despite economic difficulties and the lack of direct resources, the collective will managed to overcome obstacles and transform pain into hope.
Reopening and enthronement of the «Mamita»
In this context, the organizers announced the grand reopening and enthronement of the «Mamita», an event full of emotion that seeks to celebrate not only the recovery of the sanctuary, but also the strength of popular faith. The call invites all devotees and followers to participate in this special moment that will mark a new beginning for the community.
The ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 26 at 11:30 in the El Morado area, in Humahuaca. It will be a day of encounter and hope, where the image of the Virgin will return to its place, reaffirming that, even in the face of adversity, faith and solidarity can prevail.
This event not only represents the restoration of a physical space, but also the reaffirmation of community ties and the Marian devotion that characterizes the region. The Virgin of Urkupiña, known as the «Mamita», is a devotion deeply rooted in northwestern Argentina, and her sanctuary in Humahuaca is a pilgrimage point for numerous faithful.
The reconstruction of the sanctuary is an example of how faith can mobilize people and generate concrete actions for the benefit of the community. The solidarity campaign, which included donations of materials and money, shows that generosity and commitment can transform an adverse situation into an opportunity to strengthen social and spiritual bonds.
The organizers expect a large turnout for the ceremony on April 26, and have invited all devotees to participate with joy and hope. The image of the Virgin, restored and enthroned, will once again be the center of the community’s spiritual life, reminding that faith is a fundamental pillar to overcome any trial.
