New Stage in Vatican Supervision
Pope Francis has appointed Nuncio Aldo Cavalli as special apostolic visitor for the parish of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Cavalli’s mission will be to complete the process of normalization and study of the Marian shrine, work initiated by Polish Archbishop Henryk Hoser, the papal envoy who died from COVID-19 in August 2021. The appointment, formalized at the end of November, grants Cavalli authority to intervene in the management of the site.
Background and Context of the Investigation
Medjugorje attracts millions of pilgrims annually since 1981, when six young people reported the first apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Under the pontificate of Benedict XVI, a theological commission chaired by Cardinal Camillo Ruini analyzed the phenomena. This study concluded that the first apparitions could be considered «substantially inexplicable» and of possible supernatural nature, while the later ones raise doubts about their authenticity. Pope Francis, in his early years of pontificate, referred critically to the regularity of the messages, questioning the figure of a «Virgin with an agenda.»
Challenges in Management and Reconciliation
One of the main challenges for the new commissioner will be to mediate the tense relations between the Franciscan friars who materially administer the shrine and the local bishop. Successive diocesan authorities have been critical of the management of the site, considered by some as anarchic. Additionally, Cavalli will have to address the complexity of a religious center that, beyond its spiritual dimension, has generated significant economic development in the region, with hotels, restaurants, and services linked to religious tourism.
Previous Experience: The Amsterdam Case
The choice of Aldo Cavalli is not coincidental. As nuncio in the Netherlands, he led the resolution of the controversial case of the alleged apparitions of the Lady of All Nations in Amsterdam. After an investigation, the Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam issued a statement in 2020 declaring that the visions reported by Ida Peerdeman between 1945 and 1959 lacked supernatural authenticity, attributing them to «fantasies.» This precedent demonstrates the prelate’s ability to handle delicate matters of alleged Marian mysticism.
Ecclesial Significance and Future
Medjugorje maintains significant pastoral vitality, with millions of annual communions before the pandemic, confirmations, and documented conversions. The Holy See, without making a definitive pronouncement on the supernatural nature of the phenomena, recognizes its value as a place of prayer and penance, allowing organized pilgrimages. Cavalli’s task is framed within the Church’s ongoing effort to discern, with theological and pastoral rigor, these events, while ensuring proper administration and doctrinal order.
