A Prodigy That Endures in Popular Faith
In the Lambayeque region of northern Peru, the municipality of Ciudad Eten fervently preserves the memory of an extraordinary event that occurred in 1649. According to Catholic tradition, on June 2 of that year, the eve of the solemnity of Corpus Christi, during communal prayer in the local parish, the image of the Child Jesus visibly manifested in the consecrated host. Father Jerónimo and the faithful present witnessed the apparition of the infant figure with chestnut curls.
Second Manifestation and Consolidation of Devotion
The prodigious presence repeated on July 22 of the same year, coinciding with the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, patroness of the place. On this occasion, witnesses described the gradual materialization of a shadow or silhouette in the sacred form, which then acquired clear contours of the Divine Child, attired—according to some chronicles—in garments of purple hues. These events gave rise to the veneration of the Divine Child of the Miracle, a cult that has characterized the spiritual identity of the locality for more than three centuries.
Episcopal Testimony and Contemporary Celebration
In an interview granted in March 2024 to the channel Orbe 21, Monsignor Robert Prevost, then Bishop of Chiclayo, shared with visible emotion the lasting impact of this Eucharistic miracle. He highlighted how the diocese celebrates Corpus Christi with massive processions that gather thousands of devotees, though adapted in recent years for health and logistical considerations. In Ciudad Eten, the commemoration extends between June and July, integrating liturgical and popular activities.
Pilgrimage as a Sign of Mercy
A telling example of this devotional vitality occurred in 2024, when the Brotherhood of the Divine Child of the Miracle organized a pilgrimage on foot from Ciudad Eten to Chiclayo, covering approximately 16 kilometers. The sacred image was carried on a platform, with scheduled stops at hospitals, parishes, and health centers. «Visiting the sick and also manifesting that divine love, that presence of the Lord in those places where healthcare personnel live and express that divine mercy,» explained Monsignor Prevost. He added that «Christ manifests Himself in a special way among those who suffer, and this image of the Divine Child has been a clear sign of His merciful presence.»
Echo of Faith in the Present
In institutions such as Las Mercedes and Almantor hospitals, patients and workers received the visit with displays of deep gratitude and emotion. More than 375 years after the apparitions, the community of Ciudad Eten and the local Church perceive in this legacy a palpable testimony of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The continuity of pilgrimages and popular adherence reflect how an event from the 17th century continues to illuminate faith and nourish charity in contemporary Peru.
