A Message of Reconciliation for Venezuela and the World
At the Marian Sanctuary of Betania, located a few hours from Caracas, the Catholic Church in Venezuela has officially recognized the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin to the Servant of God María Esperanza de Bianchini. These phenomena, which occurred between 1976 and 1984, were declared authentic and of a supernatural character in 1988 by the then Bishop of Los Teques, Mons. Pío Bello Ricardo, after an extensive investigation. Since then, the site has been established as a nationally important pilgrimage center.
Ecclesial Foundation and Spirituality of the Place
Father Antonio Rivas, rector of the sanctuary, emphasized in an interview with ACI Prensa that the central message of these Marian manifestations revolves around reconciliation, peace, and unity. «Her message breaks into our reality. As Christians and as Venezuelans, we need to reconcile, we need to meet the brother who has been lost,» expressed the priest, highlighting the relevance of this call in the current context of the country and the world. The spirituality of the sanctuary is strongly supported by sacramental life, with a notable influx of faithful seeking the sacrament of reconciliation.
History of the Apparitions and Profile of the Visionary
María Esperanza de Bianchini was born in Barrancas del Orinoco in 1928 and from a young age showed a profound spiritual life. After a revelation about her lay vocation, she married Geo Bianchini in 1956 and they were parents to seven children. The Virgin described a specific place to her, the Betania Farm, which the family acquired in 1974. The first apparition at this site occurred on March 25, 1976, and the last, on the same day in 1984, was witnessed by approximately 150 people. On this last occasion, the Virgin identified herself as «Mary, Virgin and Mother Reconciler of All Peoples and Nations.»
Development of the Sanctuary and Miraculous Event
After the episcopal recognition in 1988, the Betania Farm was officially considered a sacred place and pilgrimage destination. In 1991, the sanctuary was the scene of the only Eucharistic miracle recorded in Venezuela, one of the few in Latin America, further consolidating its religious relevance. The visionary’s daughter, María del Carmen Bianchini, who witnessed the collective apparition of 1984, recounts that that day was «a confirmation of all that spiritual life» they lived. Currently, the family is responsible for spreading the devotion and managing the site, which attracts thousands of pilgrims each year, fulfilling the prophecy that it would become a place of «prayer and permanent pilgrimage,» known as «the Lourdes of America.» The cause for canonization of María Esperanza de Bianchini was opened in New Jersey, United States, on January 31, 2010.
