Popular Devotion: Testimonies of Healing and Protection through the Intercession of Saints

Faith in the Intercession of Saints

Within the framework of popular Catholic religiosity, deeply rooted in countries like Colombia, numerous faithful attribute extraordinary favors to the intercession of saints. These devotional practices, which include novenas, vows, processions, and the construction of altars, are recognized by the Church as a legitimate expression of faith, where petition and thanksgiving intertwine with the daily lives of believers.

Testimonies of Physical Healing

Isabel Jiménez, an 80-year-old woman from Barranquilla, narrates a healing experience she attributes to San Gregorio Hernández. After suffering from sinusitis for over twelve years without success in medical treatments, she turned to a devotional practice mediated by a young woman. According to her account, after a «spiritual surgery» performed in a context of deep faith and following specific instructions, the symptoms—headaches, congestion, and foul-smelling secretions—disappeared completely over four decades ago, without reappearing.

Survival in Extreme Circumstances

An even more dramatic case is that of Aura Castro, who suffered severe internal injuries after a fall. Doctors diagnosed multisystem failure and gave up on her, as she fell into a two-week coma. Her family and community began prayer chains. Upon waking, and against all medical prognosis, she began to recover. The physicians who treated her came to describe her survival as a «miracle,» attributed by Aura herself and her loved ones to the power of collective prayer and her unwavering faith.

Ecclesial Perspective on Divine Favors

Missionary priest Javier Pulgar, with over 35 years of service, corroborates that, from the perspective of faith, it is possible for devotion to contribute to healings and salvations. Furthermore, he explains that the canonization process in the Catholic Church requires, among other elements, proof of miracles—typically medically inexplicable cures—attributed to the candidate’s intercession, which provides a formal framework for these beliefs.

Patron Saints of Specific Causes

Popular devotion has assigned various saints the patronage of specific needs. Saint Jude Thaddeus is invoked in difficult and desperate cases; Saint Anthony of Padua, as a helper in finding a partner; and San Martín Caballero, for success in business and employment. Others, like Saint Roch, are protectors of pets and against epidemics, while Saint Rita is associated with success in exams and San Gregorio Hernández with medical cures. This specialization reflects how faith is embodied in the most immediate human concerns.
