A Testimony at the Marian Sanctuary
During the recent World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, a testimony from the Sanctuary of Fátima has captured the attention of the Catholic community. Jimena, a 16-year-old girl from Madrid associated with an Opus Dei group, has narrated what she describes as the miraculous recovery of her sight after receiving Communion on August 5, the feast day of the Virgin of the Snows.
Two and a Half Years of Progressive Blindness
According to the Spanish radio station COPE, the teenager had been suffering from progressive vision loss for two and a half years, which had left her practically blind, to the point of learning the braille system. On the morning of the event, Jimena woke up, as usual, «seeing everything extremely blurry.» She attended Mass with her friends and, after receiving Communion, returned to her pew. «I started crying a lot because it was the last day of the novena and I wanted to be healed. I prayed a lot to God, and when I opened my eyes, I could see perfectly,» she recounted.
«It Was Too Much»: The Moment of Perception
With emotion, the young girl described the moment she regained her vision: «It was too much. We have to be very grateful for the miracle, because I saw the altar, the Tabernacle, my friends were there and I could see them perfectly.» Jimena added that she noticed the passage of time in her companions’ faces and, later, in her own reflection. She declared herself «super happy» and thanked all the members of the prayer group that accompanied her novena, stating: «This has been a test of faith, the Virgin has given me a great gift that I will never forget.»
Reaction from Ecclesiastical Authorities
Cardinal Juan José Omella, Archbishop of Barcelona and president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, referred to the case during a press conference at the end of the WYD. After holding a video call with Jimena, the cardinal described the event as «a grace from God» and confirmed the young girl’s emotional state. He highlighted that, on that same day, Jimena was able to read the thanksgiving prayer during Mass without difficulty, something impossible for her until that moment. Cardinal Omella specified that, although the experience is lived as a great miraculous event by the protagonist, «later it will have to be evaluated by doctors, how it was, if it was, if it could be cured or not.»
Context of Faith and Hope
The event takes place within a nine-day novena of prayer directed to the Virgin Mary, coinciding with Pope Francis praying the Rosary at the same sanctuary. Jimena’s testimony emerges in a context of pilgrimage and youthful faith, offering a personal story that resonates in one of the most important Marian centers of the Catholic world. The story invites reflection on the spiritual dimension of healing and hope, without neglecting the necessary discernment that the Church applies to these phenomena.
