Vatican recognizes Eucharistic miracle in India after appearance of Christ’s face

An extraordinary event in consecration

The Vatican has officially recognized a Eucharistic miracle that occurred on November 15, 2013, at Christ the King Church in Vilakkannur, a town in the hills of Kerala, southern India. During a Mass celebrated by Father Thomas Pathickal, as he raised the consecrated host, a luminous spot appeared that gradually revealed a serene and radiant human face, identified by the faithful present as the face of Jesus Christ. The immediate reaction of veneration initiated a process of preservation and study of the Eucharistic element.

Ecclesial investigation and validation

Local ecclesiastical authorities took custody of the host and began a rigorous theological and scientific examination, following the protocols established by the Holy See for the discernment of supernatural phenomena. After almost twelve years of analysis, the official announcement of recognition was made by Monsignor Joseph Pamplany, Archbishop of Tellicherry, and communicated by Monsignor Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India. The public proclamation will take place during a solemn Eucharistic celebration on May 31, presided over by the papal representative.

Distinctive characteristics of the phenomenon

This miracle differs from others recognized by the Church, such as those in Lanciano or Buenos Aires, where transformations in heart tissue or the presence of blood were documented. In Vilakkannur, the phenomenon consists exclusively of the appearance of a face, without any manifestations of blood or organic matter, constituting a mystical sign that points directly to the person of Christ present in the Eucharist. This particularity has been highlighted as a unique testimony to the real presence.

Theological significance and pastoral call

Ecclesial recognition reinforces the central doctrine of the Catholic faith regarding the real presence of Jesus Christ—with his body, blood, soul, and divinity—in the Eucharist. The authorities see this event as a sign of divine mercy and an invitation to deepen adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, renew faith in the living presence of Jesus, and strengthen the commitment to evangelization. The face that appeared is interpreted as a call to conversion, Eucharistic love, and the mission of the Church.
