An unexpected event during the celebration
During a special Mass for the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, celebrated at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Las Vegas, several parishioners reported witnessing what they consider to be a miraculous event. According to testimonies, a face, identified by some as that of the Virgin Mary, became visible in the folds of a piece of cloth placed in the sanctuary.
The reaction of the parish community
Father Edmund Nnadozie, pastor of the church, said that he initially could not see the image from his position at the altar, but when he noticed that several parishioners were beginning to record it with their phones, he looked more closely. "I looked at it and thought, 'Wait a minute.' I looked again and it was the face of Our Lady," Nnadozie told local media. For his part, parishioner Ben Yzaguirre described the moment as a moving experience: "I think it's a miracle, a sign from heaven. It's beautiful to see, and I'm glad I was part of it."
Coincidence with a date of profound significance
The event occurred around December 12, the date on which the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This solemnity commemorates the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego in Tepeyac, Mexico, in 1531, and the miracle of the imprint of her image on his tilma or cloak. The feast day is a pillar of faith and cultural identity for millions of Catholics, especially in Mexico and among Hispanic communities in the United States.
Spiritual interpretation and message of faith
Father Nnadozie reflected on the possible meaning of the event, suggesting that its coincidence with the feast day was not accidental. "I think perhaps Our Lady was sending us a message: 'Hey, I'm still here, I know today is the celebration of my day and I can still show myself,'" he said. Beyond individual interpretation, both the pastor and parishioners agreed that the experience generated a sense of comfort and community unity. Yzaguirre noted, "Sometimes the world or the community also needs these things, and it's not just for us to keep to ourselves."
