On the 377th anniversary of the first appearance of the Divine Child of the Eucharistic Miracle of Eten, in the city of Chiclayo, northern Peru, the group Milagro Eucarístico Perú 1649 renewed its invitation to the faithful to turn their gaze toward the Eucharist and to live it with more faith and unity. The event dates back to 1649, in the ancient town of Santa Magdalena de Ciudad Eten, when on the eve of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, during Mass, “the Divine Child appeared in a consecrated host.” Months later, on July 22 of the same year, the event repeated, this time during the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, with a new appearance and the sign of “three intertwined hearts symbolizing the Most Holy Trinity.”
A gift from God to live in communion
These events, recorded by ecclesiastical authorities of the time, have been preserved in historical documents that are now kept in the Convent of San Francisco in Lima and in the General Archive of the Indies in Seville, Spain. In the context of this special date, the group Milagro Eucarístico Perú 1649 recalled that its mission is simple but profound: to bring more people to love the Eucharist. They also evoked the words of the then Bishop of Chiclayo and now Pope Leo XIV, Msgr. Robert Prevost, who has been one of the great promoters of the recognition of the miracle before the Vatican. During a celebration in Eten, he expressed: “This beautiful gift, this great gift that God, source of all life, of all that is good… this gift that God has made here, with you for you, precisely to live this joy of being united in the communion of the Church with the Child of the Miracle.”
Faith lived in everyday life
Beyond the commemorative acts, the celebration was also marked by new stories of faith. One of them is that of Gabriel Crosby Sánchez. His mother, Arabella, recounted with emotion how from a very young age she placed him under the protection of the Child of the Miracle and took him every Saturday to the so-called Promise Masses. Over time, this path bore fruit: today Gabriel serves as an acolyte at the Parish of Saint John Mary Vianney in Magdalena del Mar, Lima. For his family and the community, his story is a simple but strong sign that faith is transmitted at home, in everyday life, and that when lived with constancy it can transform life.
A devotion that continues to walk
On this anniversary, the group Milagro Eucarístico Perú 1649 especially thanked the welcome of the community of Magdalena del Mar, where the image of the Divine Child of the Miracle was recently received. It also renewed its invitation to the faithful to join the spiritual pilgrimage that has been traveling through different areas of the country —such as downtown Lima, Comas, Lurín, and Bellavista— as preparation for a future meeting with the Holy Father. In 2019, Msgr. Prevost delivered to Pope Francis a document on the history of the Miracle of Eten that gathers “20,000 testimonies of faith,” and that same year he stated: “this miracle is approved as a continuous tradition in the city of Eten.”
